Serenity Now!
So I went and saw the movie Serenity, which is the movie adaptation of the series Firefly. For those of you who don't know, Firefly was a scifi/comedy series that was on Fox for one season before it got canceled. Now don't let its short life fool you, this series was one of the best ever made. The main problem is that Fox did a horrible job in advertising it. I had never even heard of it until well after it got canceled, and I would consider myself the prime target audience. And I did my part to be available to be targeted by watching my fair share of television. Anyway, I since watched the episodes that were made and absolutely fell in love with the series. I apparently was not alone in this, because once the series was released on DVD the sales were unbelievable. As with Family Guy, the makers saw the response to the DVD release and thought, "huh. Maybe we should do something else with this." Hence, the movie Serenity was born.
I have been waiting for this movie for a little over a year now when I first heard that they were making it. I unfortunately did not go see it on opening night on Friday, but I did make it to a Saturday matinee showing of it. I have to say, it was very good. It felt a lot like the show. There were a few moments though that I did not expect, and for those of you who have seen the show and the movie might know what I am talking about. I don't want to give away any spoilers or anything, but the light-hearted feeling that I associate with Firefly, while still there in many parts, definitely did not hold throughout. There were a couple of times my heart jumped into my throat and I could not believe what I was seeing. But I still walked away pleased to have seen another installment of a great series.
Here's to hoping that the movie will do well, and Fox will decide to truly go a la Family Guy and bring the show back.
On an unrelated note, the Red Sox beat the Yankees tonight in the last game of the regular season and clinched their spot in the post season as the wild card. The Yankees are the AL East champions, despite having an identical record with the Red Sox. That's bullshit. No, I dont think there should be a one game playoff since both teams made the post-season anyway and it would not be good to go into the playoffs without a day to rest. But come on...the Yankees suck. They dont deserve the title. Screw them.
